The NYC Restaurant Industry
NYC is home to thousands of restaurants—and thousands of wage and hour violations on the state and federal levels. NYC’s bustling restaurant industry is subject to many complex regulations and rules that determine how much employees should be paid for what type of work, how and if employees should receive tips, and even what paperwork employees must receive. Meanwhile, the industry itself has traditionally been operated on a cash basis, with standards of bookkeeping and employee time tracking that are ill equipped to manage and obey the many state and federal requirements and rules. This combination of factors leads to an unfortunate situation where many NYC restaurant employers do not pay their employees the correct amount of money in the correct way. However, New York’s labor laws are very favorable for the employee. This means that if you have not been paid correctly, you have a good chance of receiving compensation through legal action.
